Album Review: What Now

I have to admit I have a soft spot for Sylvan Esso, I find their self titled first album to be god damn magical. If you don’t know of this band, they put out unicorn type electronic trip hop music. If that description doesn’t seem clear then check them out and see if you can come up with something better.

Naturally, when I saw they released a new track and announced their upcoming album, I was very excited. I thought it a bit misguided to release it the same day as the Gorillaz album but who am I to judge? and hear I am listening to their album as well. I found their first single from the album, “Die Young” to be sweet, melodic, and containing all the quirky elements that make them who they are.

The rest of the album pushed the band’s sound a bit forward but they never diverged from their path because they honestly don’t have to. Their sound is so out there, that they don’t really have to go anywhere, they’re in a league of their own.  Their second single, “Radio” followed strong and if you’re looking for an obscure band you can share with your friends over arisanal coffee while you polish your brown wingtips, then check them out.

At 10 tracks, the album is short and easy to digest and that’s befitting of this band’s sound. It doesn’t try to be more than what it is, its not 22 full tracks long, Drake. It’s a fun, short trip, and one worth taking.
